Veterans Day Essay


Veterans have put their lives at risk so we can sleep at night knowing we’re safe. They must leave our country and fight for our freedom. Not only do they risk their lives but might have to take another person’s life. Therefore, we should honor veterans every day, and not just veteran's day.
Many veterans also face poverty due to one or more of several reasons. The number is only rising as more veterans return. Over half of homeless veterans have been diagnosed with mental disorders. Veterans should be honored every day for the struggles they went through during service, and upon returning home for many.

Greg Blackburn, a veteran of the Vietnam war, told my class and I, “when you are in the service, it is for one reason: so, mother, father, brother and sister can sleep at night.” What he was saying made me think about how selfless veterans are. They put their lives aside for the greater good of our country. “I don’t see myself as a hero, those on the wall are,” another quotation from Mr. Blackburn. The selflessness of veterans is something alone worth honoring each day.

Not only did veterans put their lives on the line, but also must leave the ones they love for a long period of time. Nearly 70% of officers and over 50% of all enlisted people are married, meaning not only must they face risk, but their families may also be affected as well. Many of those enlisted must go through times of separation, even at times of peace. Being separated from your family for a long period of time, something almost all veterans must do, would be quite a difficult thing to do is another reason veterans should be honored more than just on veteran’s day. 

 Veterans should be honored on more than just veteran's day because they put their life on the line for the greater good. Not only do they risk their lives but must be separated from their loved ones for a long period of time.
